Championing Equality, Diversity, and Inclusion in the Production Music Industry

In today’s rapidly evolving music industry, the importance of Equality, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI) cannot be overstated. These values are vital for fostering creativity, ensuring representation, and building an industry that reflects the rich diversity of our society. At the forefront of these efforts within MediaTracks Music is Maria, our dedicated Partnerships and Operations Manager. Her passion and commitment to promoting EDI have not only set a new standard within our organisation but have also earned us recognition as a trailblazer in the wider production music community.

Maria’s journey is as inspiring as it is impactful. Originally from the vibrant city of Bogotá, Colombia, Maria brings a unique perspective shaped by her rich Latin heritage and diverse personal experiences. After moving to the UK five years ago, she transitioned from working part-time in hospitality to establishing herself in the music sync and publishing industry – a journey marked by resilience and determination. Her background as a Latinx, woman, immigrant, and member of the LGBTQ+ community gives her a deep understanding of the challenges faced by underrepresented groups in the industry, fuelling her passion for promoting diversity and inclusion.

Maria’s pioneering work in EDI began with her groundbreaking contribution to our Diversity Report, presented to UK Music. Her efforts are not just about fulfilling obligations but about genuinely embedding EDI into the fabric of our operations. Maria’s approach ensures that every decision and partnership reflects our commitment to these principles, making MediaTracks Music a leader in this crucial area.

One of Maria’s most impactful initiatives has been forging strategic partnerships that create meaningful opportunities for underrepresented groups in the music industry. A shining example of this is our collaboration with Leeds Conservatoire, where Maria played a pivotal role in promoting the Quarry Music label. This innovative label, managed by Conservatoire interns, provides students with hands-on experience in the music industry, bridging the gap between academic learning and real-world application.

Beyond developing partnerships, Maria has worked closely with the BPI, British Film Editors, and the MediaTracks Apprenticeship Scheme to develop initiatives that offer inclusive opportunities across the music production industry. Her vision is clear: to create a space where everyone, regardless of background, has the chance to contribute, create, and succeed.

One of the most inspiring aspects of Maria’s work is her dedication to organising writing camps specifically designed for underrepresented voices. Each year, she curates camps that bring together LGBTQ+ artists, all-female groups, black artists, Latin American artists, and Welsh artists, among others. These camps are more than just creative retreats; they are platforms for these artists to express their unique perspectives, resulting in diverse and innovative albums that enrich our catalogue. Our partnership with TYX Studios in London has further amplified these efforts, providing a professional and supportive environment where these voices can truly shine.

In addition to these specialised camps, Maria has also overseen the development of commercial camps for educational institutions. These programmes offer students from colleges and universities a comprehensive understanding of the production music industry, combining practical skills with insights into the business side of music. Participants not only hone their craft but also gain invaluable knowledge about contracts, royalties, and building a professional composer portfolio. Through these initiatives, Maria ensures that the next generation of music professionals is well-equipped to navigate and succeed in the production industry.

Raised by two incredible women – her mother and grandmother – Maria learned early on the values of compassion, love, honesty, and generosity. These principles guide her ethos, shaping her commitment to making a positive impact through her work and actions. Her approach to EDI is deeply human, rooted in her belief that true inclusion comes from understanding and valuing the unique contributions of every individual. Maria’s work is not just about creating opportunities; it’s about fostering an environment where everyone feels empowered to bring their full selves to the table. Through her dedication, Maria has made EDI not just a policy but a lived reality within our company, and her efforts continue to inspire us all.

As we look to the future, we are excited to see how Maria’s work will continue to shape the production music industry, making it a more inclusive and vibrant space for all. Her journey from Bogotá to the forefront of EDI in the UK’s music industry serves as a powerful reminder of the impact that one passionate and determined individual can make. Maria’s story is not just one of professional success but of a deep commitment to using her platform to drive meaningful change, ensuring that the music industry is a place where diversity is not just acknowledged but celebrated.
